Wrought Iron Gate Repair and Brick Column Restoration in Colleyville, TX

When a Gate Problem Turns Out to Be Inside the Column

Sometimes a project starts with something that seems pretty obvious — in this case, a wrought iron driveway gate that was dragging against the brick column every time it opened.

The homeowner in Colleyville, Texas had already discovered the temporary solution… a ratchet strap holding the gate in place just to keep it usable. Not exactly a long-term fix, but it worked until someone could figure out what was actually going on.

They called Wise Home Services to take a look.

From the outside, it was clear the hinge side of the gate had detached somewhere inside the brick column. Gates like this are typically supported by several steel rods that extend from the hinge side of the gate into the column itself. The challenge is that until the column is opened up, you can’t always see exactly where the failure occurred.

And that’s where the real work begins.

To reach the internal structure, sections of brick had to be carefully removed from the column. The homeowner had only five spare bricks available, so this was definitely a situation where precision mattered. The goal was to remove just enough masonry to expose the internal post while preserving as much of the original brick as possible.

Once the column was opened, the real issue became clear. The base of the internal iron post had failed inside the column, which allowed the gate to shift and start rubbing against the opposite brick column.

To repair it, a reinforcement bracket was welded along most of the length of the post and anchored to the concrete foundation inside the column, restoring the support needed to properly hold the gate. Jobs like this are a good reminder that some repairs require a mix of different trades — masonry work, welding, and a little structural problem-solving along the way.

Projects like this are exactly why I say he’s “not your everyday handyman.”

With the internal support repaired, the brick column was rebuilt and the mortar carefully matched so the repair blended naturally with the original masonry. In the end, four of the homeowner’s spare bricks were used to complete the rebuild.

The project took about a day and a half, and like most of our jobs, the work area was cleaned up at the end of each day so the homeowner could still move around the property safely.

As a finishing touch, we also touched up the paint on the gate where it had been rubbing against the brick, restoring both the function and appearance of the entryway.

What the Handyman Noticed

Dragging or sagging wrought iron gates are often a sign that something has shifted inside the supporting column. Because the structure is hidden behind masonry, the real cause isn’t always obvious until the area is opened up.

Addressing the structural support inside the column prevents further damage to both the gate and the brickwork — and keeps the repair from turning into a much bigger problem later.

Just another example of why I married a problem solver.
